520 _aThis book covers several aspects of the synthesis of composites by the infiltration technique. It examines the methods used to obtain green precursors, such as hot pressing, and describes the heating time, load, and time required for pressing the precursors. Additionally, wettability phenomena, which have an impact on infiltration, are expounded upon. An extensive section on structural, chemical, and mechanical characterization of composites fabricated with aluminum and magnesium alloys as matrices is included. Relevant techniques for joining composites, such as welding and brazing, as well as issues pertaining to the corrosion of composites are discussed as well. The structural characterization techniques addressed include: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical microscopy (OM), differential thermal analysis (DAT), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Theoretical models and mechanical testing considerations including hardness measurements, tension tests, and impact tests are included as well.
